Restoran Ankee Yong Tauhu 安记酿豆腐 !

First visit to Restoran Ankee Yong Tauhu (安记酿豆腐), recommended by a couple of friends. 😋

Located in JB (Skudai), along a stretch of some nice eateries and shophouses.

A quick note on yong tau foo (酿豆腐): it’s the Hakka dish of tofu and vegetables (chillies, brinjal, okra, beancurd skin, bittergourd and more) stuffed with a fish or meat paste. You pick the pieces you want, and they’re either served in a clear soup or, the Malaysian way here, with a rich curry gravy.

The eatery is free seating and it was pretty packed on a Sunday noon.

Ordered our chosen ingredients (RM1.50 per piece) with curry and noodles (RM3.50 each), paired with barley gingko dessert (RM4 each):

Yong tau foo with curry and noodles at Restoran Ankee

The curry gravy is what sets this apart from the Singapore soup-based yong tau foo, it’s coconut-rich and savoury, soaking into the stuffed tofu and beancurd pieces and clinging to the noodles. The deep-fried items in particular soak it up beautifully. The barley gingko dessert is the classic cooling counterpart, lightly sweet with that faint nutty bitterness from the gingko nuts, perfect after the rich curry.

The total damage (RM30):

Total bill RM30 at Restoran Ankee

The eatery is free seating and it was pretty packed on a weekend noon, always a good sign. For RM30 for the spread (a steal in SGD terms), it’s no wonder Singaporeans make the trip across. Definitely worth recommending and will revisit again!

Overall: 4.3 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Coconut-rich curry yong tau foo at JB prices, with a cooling barley gingko to finish. Worth the causeway trip.
