Nasi lemak ($12.40)!
A loaded nasi lemak: coconut rice with fried chicken, otah, sambal long beans, okra, cucumber and sambal. $12.40.
A proper, loaded nasi lemak with BB: the works, for $12.40. ๐
What we had (two plates):
- Coconut rice with fried chicken, otah wrapped in banana leaf, sambal long beans, sambal okra, cucumber and sambal
This was nasi lemak with all the trimmings, a real spread rather than the bare-bones version. The base is the coconut rice, cooked with coconut milk and pandan so it is fragrant and rich, the foundation everything else gets piled around.
The toppings were the generous part. A crispy fried chicken wing, golden and juicy, and a slab of smoky otah (grilled spiced fish paste in banana leaf) gave two proper proteins. Then the vegetable sides lifted it: sambal long beans and sambal okra, both stir-fried in that spicy, savoury chilli paste, plus cool cucumber to refresh.
But the sambal is the soul of any nasi lemak, and this one was excellent: sweet, spicy and a touch tangy, with that slow-cooked depth, the thing you smear over each bite. Mix a little of everything, and you get that classic nasi lemak harmony of fragrant rice, spice, crunch and freshness.
A complete, satisfying plate, generously done. At $12.40, fair for the spread.
Overall: 4.7 / 5. ๐๐๐ผ Fragrant coconut rice, crispy chicken, smoky otah and a brilliant sambal, a loaded nasi lemak. Would re-order.
