The McDonald’s $1 cone is the dependable dessert default that’s been on every menu for as long as McDonald’s has operated in Singapore. The standard flavour is vanilla; periodic limited-edition promos bring out different flavour rotations — strawberry, chocolate, peach, and the local-flavour pandan version.
The pandan flavour leans the Singapore-local nostalgia direction. Pandan (screw-pine leaf) is the iconic Southeast Asian aromatic, used in kueh, chiffon cake, kaya jam, and now soft-serve. The flavour profile is the subtle floral-grassy-vanilla note that’s distinctly local — different from the obvious pandan-flavoured Chinese desserts that lean sweet, the McDonald’s version is more restrained with the proper aroma.
The colour is the giveaway. Pale green-tinted soft-serve from the pandan flavour (or food colouring depending on the formulation), with the standard McDonald’s machine swirl pattern piled high in the waffle cone. The cone is the standard sweet wafer that McDonald’s uses across all their soft-serve formats.
The eating ritual is fast. The cone arrives still slightly chilled from the machine, with the soft-serve starting to melt the moment it’s exposed to Singapore weather. You eat fast, working through the top swirl before the melt starts running down the cone.
At $1 each this is the cheapest possible dessert in Singapore that’s still recognisable as proper soft-serve. The McDonald’s pricing on the cone has stayed at $1 for years despite inflation creeping into everything else, which makes it the impulse-purchase default for after-work or after-meal cravings.
Limited-edition flavours drop and disappear within a few weeks of the promo cycle, so the pandan cone gets caught while it’s on the menu. Same approach for other local-flavour drops — buah keluak (?), nasi lemak, anything else McDonald’s tries.
Overall: 4.4 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Fun pandan cone — would re-order during the promo window.
