酿豆腐 / Yong tau foo ($0.60/pc, $9.60)!
A build-your-own yong tau foo for two: 16 pieces of stuffed tofu, beancurd skin and tau pok, one dry with sweet sauce and one in soup. $9.60.
A pick-your-own dinner with BB: 酿豆腐 (yong tau foo) at $0.60 a piece, $9.60 for 16 pieces between us. 😋
What we had:
- A dry plate of yong tau foo over greens, with sweet sauce and chilli drizzled on top
- A soup bowl of yong tau foo with cabbage and beancurd skin in a clear broth
- A kopi on the side
The best thing about yong tau foo is that you build it yourself: point at whatever you fancy from the tray, pay per piece, and choose how you want it served. We split it two ways so we could have both styles.
The dry version is my favourite, the picked items piled over a base of noodles and greens, then finished with that signature sweet brown sauce and a dab of chilli that you mix through. The soup version was the lighter, more soothing one, the same stuffed pieces in a clean, savoury broth.
Across both, the highlights were the same: puffy tau pok that drinks up the soup or sauce, silky beancurd skin, and the stuffed items packed with springy fish paste. At $0.60 a piece you can mix and match exactly what you like, which is half the fun, and $9.60 for a full meal for two is honest value.
Overall: 4.5 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Build-your-own yong tau foo two ways, dry with sweet sauce and soup, comforting and great value. Would re-order.
