叉烧 烧肉 云吞面 ($4.50)!
A plate of wonton noodles topped with both char siu and crispy siu yuk, with a bowl of wonton soup on the side. $4.50.
A satisfying Cantonese hawker lunch, 叉烧 烧肉 云吞面 (char siu + siu yuk + wonton noodles) for $4.50, getting both roast meats on one plate. 😋
What we had:
- Char siu + siu yuk + wonton noodles: thin egg noodles topped with sliced char siu and crispy roast pork belly, blanched kailan and a dab of dark sauce, with a bowl of wonton soup on the side
This is the classic roast-meat wonton mee, and going for both meats is the smart order. The base is springy thin egg noodles (mee kia), tossed in that savoury dark sauce so each strand is glossy, with a stalk of greens for freshness.
The two roast meats are the draw. The char siu had that lovely caramelised, slightly charred edge, sweet and savoury with a bit of fat to keep it juicy. The siu yuk brought the crunch, crackly crisp skin over layers of fat and tender meat underneath, so good against the soft noodles. Getting both means you get the sweet-sticky and the crispy-savoury in the same plate.
On the side, a bowl of wonton soup with smooth pork-filled wontons floating in a clear broth, plus a saucer of cut chilli padi in a tangy chilli that wakes everything up. Simple, generous and full of flavour. Lovely value at $4.50.
Overall: 4.6 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Springy noodles with caramelised char siu and crackly siu yuk, with wontons on the side. Would re-order.
