炸饺粿条 ($3.50)!
A bowl of kway teow soup topped with crispy fried dumplings, a piece of braised meat and leafy greens. $3.50.
A comforting hawker lunch, 炸饺粿条 (fried dumpling kway teow) for $3.50, in a light soup. 😋
What we had:
- Fried dumpling kway teow: flat rice noodles in a light soup with crispy fried dumplings, a piece of braised meat, leafy greens and fried shallots, with a splash of dark sauce
This was the soup version, and the fun of it is the contrast. The base is soft, slippery kway teow (flat rice noodles) in a clear, savoury broth with a splash of dark sauce stirred through and a scatter of fried shallots for fragrance.
The fried dumplings are the draw: three plump ones with a crispy, golden deep-fried skin and a soft pork filling inside. They sit on top so the skins stay crunchy at first, then slowly soak up a bit of soup and soften, that lovely crispy-then-tender thing. A piece of braised meat and some blanched greens round the bowl out.
Soft noodles, crispy dumplings, light soup, it is simple but really comforting, and at $3.50 it is the kind of honest neighbourhood bowl that is getting harder to find at this price. A good, easy lunch.
Overall: 4.5 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Slippery kway teow in a light soup with crispy fried pork dumplings. Would re-order.
