Prawn noodles, coincidentally with complimentary hash brown ($3.50)!
A hawker bowl of dry prawn noodles with prawn, pork and fishcake, topped (unexpectedly) with a free hash brown. $3.50.
A budget hawker lunch with a funny little bonus: prawn noodles, $3.50, that came (coincidentally!) with a complimentary hash brown perched on top. π€π
What I had:
- Prawn noodles, dry-style: flat noodles and bee hoon with prawns, sliced pork and fishcake, with a bowl of prawn broth on the side
- A surprise hash brown sitting on the noodles
The prawn noodles themselves were the comfort. Dry-tossed flat noodles and bee hoon in a savoury, slightly sweet sauce, topped with plump prawns, slices of tender pork and fishcake, with greens for freshness. The real magic is in the prawn broth served alongside, that deep, sweet shellfish stock simmered from prawn heads and shells that you sip between mouthfuls. A spoon of chilli stirred in adds a kick.
And then the hash brown. Quite why a crispy Western potato hash brown ended up crowning a bowl of prawn noodles, Iβm not sure (a happy mix-up, or hawker generosity), but it was a fun, golden, crunchy surprise to find on top. A bit random, totally welcome.
Cheap, tasty and with an unexpected freebie, this was exactly the kind of small, silly food joy that makes a hawker lunch.
Overall: 4.6 / 5. πππΌ Savoury prawn noodles with a sweet shellfish broth, plus a bonus hash brown. Would re-order.
