TGIF lunch ($4.70): mee goreng with fried chicken!
A Friday hawker plate: dark mee goreng with a fried chicken wing, fried egg and stir-fried kangkong. $4.70.
TGIF! 😋 Closing out the week with a hearty hawker plate: $4.70 for mee goreng with all the trimmings.
What I had:
- Mee goreng topped with a crumbly egg, a fried chicken wing and stir-fried kangkong
This was a generous, mix-and-match plate, the kind you point at a few things and pile together. The mee goreng was the savoury base: yellow noodles wok-fried dark in a sweet-spicy sauce, with that smoky wok hei char and a little crumbled egg through it.
The toppings made it a proper meal. The fried chicken wing was the treat, crisp and golden with a crunchy, savoury crust, and the stir-fried kangkong (water spinach) added something green and garlicky to cut through the richness. Between the savoury noodles, the crunchy chicken and the fresh greens, you get a bit of everything in one plate.
Not fancy, just a filling, satisfying Friday lunch to wind down the work week, and the sort of cheap, generous hawker eating I never tire of. A squeeze of chilli or lime over the noodles perks it up nicely.
Overall: 4.5 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Smoky mee goreng with a crispy chicken wing and garlicky kangkong, a satisfying TGIF plate. Would re-do.
