Tomato egg ($9) & Mee sua ($5.50)!

Comforting zi char dinner with BB: tomato egg ($9) + mee sua ($5.50). 😋

What was on the table ($14.50):

Tomato egg is the ultimate Chinese home-cooking comfort dish, the one almost everyone grew up eating. It’s deceptively simple, tomatoes cooked down until juicy and jammy, folded through soft scrambled eggs, with a touch of sugar and salt to balance, but the magic is in that sweet-savoury, slightly tangy sauce the tomatoes release. Spoon it over rice and it’s pure nostalgia. This version was well done, the eggs soft and silky rather than overcooked, and plenty of that lovely tomato gravy.

The mee sua was the gentle partner: those fine, soft wheat vermicelli in a clear, comforting broth, the kind of light, easy-to-eat noodle that pairs perfectly with a saucy dish like the tomato egg. Mee sua is also the “longevity noodle” eaten on birthdays, so there’s a homely, auspicious feel to it.

Together they make the sort of unfussy, soothing meal you’d cook at home, just done for you at a zi char stall. At $14.50 for the two, it was honest comfort food at a fair price.

Overall: 4.6 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Silky tomato egg with that lovely sweet-tangy gravy, and a comforting bowl of mee sua. Homely and satisfying. Would re-order.
