Wah Kee 华记 — 叉烧云吞面 ($3.50)!

A classic Sunday hawker lunch with BB at Wah Kee 华记: their 叉烧云吞面 (char siu wonton mee), $3.50. 😋

What I had:

This is Singapore-style wanton mee done the way I like it, dry rather than soupy. The thin egg noodles are tossed in a dark, savoury sauce so each strand turns glossy and full of flavour, with a lovely springy bite that tells you they weren’t overcooked.

On top sits the char siu: slices of Cantonese roast pork with that signature caramelised, lacquered edge and a sweet-savoury glaze, a little smoky where it has charred. A few stalks of crunchy greens balance the richness.

On the side, the wontons come in a bowl of clear soup, plump little pork parcels with thin, slippery skins that you slurp between mouthfuls of noodles. The clear soup also doubles as something to sip and reset the palate. A dab of the chilli or some pickled green chilli stirred in lifts the whole thing.

Wah Kee is a well-loved name for good reason, and at $3.50 for a bowl this satisfying, it is hard to beat.

Overall: 4.7 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Springy noodles, glossy caramelised char siu and plump wontons, a great-value classic. Would re-visit.
