Super bara chirashi don ($20) & Unagi tamago don ($16)!
Two Japanese rice bowls: a super bara chirashi don of diced sashimi over rice, and an unagi tamago don of grilled eel over egg. $36.
A Japanese donburi dinner with BB: a super bara chirashi don ($20) and an unagi tamago don ($16), with miso soups. ๐ฃ๐
What we had ($36 total):
- Super bara chirashi don: diced salmon, tuna and other sashimi scattered over sushi rice, with tamago, tobiko, a prawn and a dab of wasabi
- Unagi tamago don: grilled eel laid over a bed of fluffy egg and rice
- Two miso soups
The super bara chirashi was the colourful, generous one. โBaraโ means scattered, so instead of neat sashimi slices you get the fish cubed and piled over seasoned rice, which makes it fun to eat: every spoonful is a different mix of buttery salmon, lean tuna and other bits, with the tobiko adding little salty pops and the sweet tamago breaking it up. Fresh, varied and satisfying.
The unagi tamago don was the warm, comforting counterpart. Glossy grilled eel, glazed in that sweet-savoury kabayaki sauce and lacquered dark, sitting over soft scrambled egg and rice, so the sauce soaks down into everything. Rich, gently sweet and deeply satisfying.
Getting one cool-and-fresh bowl and one warm-and-rich bowl was the right call, and they balanced each other nicely. Both were generous and well made.
Overall: 4.7 / 5. ๐๐๐ผ A fresh, varied chirashi and a glossy sweet eel don, two excellent rice bowls. Would re-visit.
