Wanton mee ($4.50)!
Sunday hawker — wanton mee $4.50. The Cantonese classic at standard hawker pricing.
Sunday late hawker meal with BB — wanton mee at $4.50. The reliable Singapore-Cantonese hawker classic.
We ordered:
- Wanton mee (dry) — $4.50
The mee pok noodles were the substantial component. Cooked to that proper QQ chew — slight bite, not over-soft, not chalky undercooked. Tossed in the classic sauce mix — dark sweet-soy, chilli paste, a touch of vinegar, pork lard oil for body. Each strand coated thoroughly.
Char siew slices were the headline topping. Properly caramelised edges, lean-fatty balance, with the proper sweet-soy lacquered colour.
A handful of choy sum on top for green. The blanched leafy greens provide the small fresh component against the heavy sauce.
The side bowl of clear soup with three plump wantons (prawn-and-pork filling, thin skin) is the proper accompaniment. Light savoury broth with a piece of choy sum, palate-cleansing.
A small dish of pickled green chillies on the side for the optional sour-spicy lift.
At $4.50 a plate this is the standard hawker pricing for wanton mee in 2019. Multiple bowls of wanton mee through March (this is probably the third or fourth bowl of the format this month) suggests it’s one of the consistent rotation defaults.
The Sunday late slot is part of the weekend rotation pattern. After the morning’s brunch and the afternoon’s activities, the late Sunday meal is the small substantial stop before evening winds down.
Wanton mee is one of the dishes I keep coming back to specifically because the consistency makes it reliable. Even on days when nothing else sounds appealing, a bowl of wanton mee at $4-5 hits the right format. The combination of dry noodles + sauce + char siew + soup wantons covers the substantial-meal architecture without committing to a heavy single-item order.
Phase 2 hawker centres continue to deliver the best Singapore food value-per-dollar. The wanton mee stalls have been steady through the years, with the technique passed down through generations of hawker families.
Overall: 4.3 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Reliable wanton mee — would re-order.
