Chocolate ($2.20) x Mango ($1.20)!
Wednesday afternoon ice cream — chocolate scoop + mango scoop $2.20 + $1.20. The budget-tier scoop pair.
Wednesday afternoon ice cream pickup with BB — chocolate ($2.20) + mango ($1.20). The budget-tier scoop pair from one of the neighbourhood ice cream spots.
We ordered:
- Chocolate scoop — $2.20
- Mango scoop — $1.20
Total: $3.40 for both scoops.
The pricing difference between the two scoops is the small giveaway of the ice cream spot’s pricing structure. Chocolate is the premium scoop at $2.20; mango is the budget scoop at $1.20. The $1 price difference reflects probably the ingredient cost (premium chocolate flavouring vs. mango syrup) or the popularity tier.
The chocolate scoop was the headline. At $2.20 the format is probably the proper milk chocolate or dark chocolate ice cream, with the real cocoa or chocolate-flavoured base (not just chocolate-coloured ice cream with weak chocolate flavour).
The chocolate ice cream profile depends on the cocoa percentage and the technique. Milk chocolate ice cream leans sweeter with the slight creaminess; dark chocolate ice cream leans the bittersweet direction with the proper chocolate depth.
The mango scoop was the budget option. Probably the proper mango-flavoured ice cream with real mango puree or mango juice incorporated into the base. The mango profile is the tropical-sweet flavour with the slight floral aroma that fresh mangoes have.
The combination eats as the chocolate-meets-fruit pairing. The chocolate’s depth pairs with the mango’s bright sweetness, with each spoonful providing a different flavour direction depending on which scoop you’re working through.
At $3.40 total for two scoops, this is excellent budget ice cream pricing. The specialty gelato spots run $4-6 per scoop; the budget tier hits $1-3 per scoop depending on the flavour.
Neighbourhood ice cream spots that run sub-$3 scoops are quietly disappearing. The specialty gelato chains have pushed pricing up across the board, and the older $1-2 scoop shops have either closed or moved their pricing closer to the standard.
The Wednesday afternoon ice cream pickup is the small mid-week indulgence. Different from the planned weekend dessert stops, the Wednesday afternoon scoop is the spontaneous mid-week treat.
We picked up the two scoops in a small cup (no cone) and walked back home eating them. The Singapore weather doesn’t allow for slow cone-eating; the cup-and-spoon format is the proper local approach.
Overall: 4.3 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Solid budget scoop pair — would re-order.
