What we had:
- Char siew wanton mee: thin egg noodles in dark sauce with caramelised char siew, greens and crispy lard, with wontons in soup on the side
The char siew is what you pay the extra for here, and it earned it. Beautiful slices with caramelised, lacquered edges and a little char, glossy and sweet-savoury with that lovely fatty-edged richness, generously fanned over the noodles. Some of the best-looking char siew in a wanton mee.
The base is springy thin egg noodles (mee pok), tossed in a dark sweet-soy and chilli dressing so each strand is glossy and well seasoned, with a scatter of crispy lard bits for crunch and a stalk of greens for freshness. On the side, a bowl of wontons in clear soup, smooth pork dumplings in a clean broth to sip between mouthfuls.
A spoon of the pickled green chilli on the side adds a sharp, tangy lift. The extra char siew makes it feel like a treat over the basic bowl, and at $5 it is well worth it.
Overall: 4.4 / 5. ๐๐๐ผ Springy noodles with gorgeously caramelised char siew, crispy lard and wontons in soup. Would re-order.
