Japanese pork fried rice set ($7.90)!
A Japanese set: pork chahan (fried rice) with karaage and pan-fried gyoza on the side. $7.90.
A satisfying Japanese set lunch: pork fried rice with karaage and gyoza, $7.90. ๐
What we had ($7.90):
- Pork chahan: Japanese fried rice with bits of pork, corn, egg and scallion, topped with pink pickled ginger
- Karaage: Japanese fried chicken
- Gyoza: pan-fried dumplings
This was the Japanese take on a fried rice set, and a generous plate for the price. The chahan was the base, short-grain rice wok-fried so each grain stayed separate and lightly golden, studded with little bits of pork, sweet corn, egg and scallion, with a tangle of bright beni shoga (pickled ginger) on top for a sharp, tangy lift.
Around it were the two sides that made it a proper meal. The karaage was the favourite, craggy nuggets of fried chicken, crisp and juicy, the kind you keep reaching for. And the gyoza brought the other texture, pan-fried with golden, slightly crisp bottoms and juicy filling inside, lovely dipped in soy and vinegar.
Rice, fried chicken and dumplings all on one plate for $7.90 is a good deal, the sort of comforting, filling lunch that hits the spot mid-week.
Overall: 4.2 / 5. ๐๐๐ผ Fragrant pork chahan with crispy karaage and juicy gyoza, a satisfying Japanese set. Would re-order.
