Pork fried rice set ($7.90)!

Wednesday lunch — pork fried rice set at $7.90. The Chinese restaurant set lunch format.

We ordered:

The pork fried rice set is the Chinese restaurant lunch standard. Fried rice with pork as the main, plus a small soup, a vegetable side, and sometimes pickled accompaniments as the supporting components.

The pork fried rice was the headline. Short-grain rice wok-fried with diced pork (probably char siew slices or simply minced pork), beaten egg ribbons, scallion, and a touch of soy. The wok hei aroma comes through if the kitchen has a proper hot wok.

The pork component varied. Some restaurants use char siew (Cantonese roast pork) diced into the rice; others use minced pork that browns in the wok during the fry. The set pricing at $7.90 suggests probably the standard diced char siew approach.

Each grain of rice properly coated in egg (the giveaway of proper wok technique — egg poured into the wok first, rice tossed in second, so the egg coats each grain rather than scrambling into chunks). Light gold colour throughout, with the proper smokey wok-toasted aroma even after sitting at the table.

The set components included:

Some sets include a drink (Chinese tea or soft drink); others charge separately. At $7.90 the drink is probably included.

At $7.90 for the pork fried rice set this is fair Chinese restaurant lunch pricing. Substantial enough to fill the weekday lunch slot, with the supporting set components providing the variety that the single fried rice plate alone wouldn’t.

The Wednesday lunch slot is the right venue for a Chinese set. After the Tuesday hawker stops and the Monday home cooking, Wednesday’s Chinese restaurant set adds another cuisine variation to the rotation.

The pattern through early December had stabilised. Home weekday cooking + hawker breaks + restaurant lunches across cuisines (Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Filipino) + occasional Burpple Beyond / Chope voucher dinners.

Overall: 4.2 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Solid pork fried rice set — would re-order.
