Wednesday hawker dinner — lor mee + chicken cutlet lor mee at $4.80 + $5. Twin plates of the Hokkien starchy gravy noodles, with one upgraded to the chicken cutlet variant.
We ordered:
- Lor mee (standard) — $4.80
- Chicken cutlet lor mee — $5
Total: $9.80 for both plates.
The two-plate order let us compare the standard lor mee with the chicken cutlet variant side-by-side. Both bowls share the same gravy and noodle base; the difference is the upgrade topping.
The standard lor mee at $4.80 came with the classic spread: sliced pork belly, fish cake slices, fried wontons, blanched bean sprouts, and a hard-boiled egg in the thick starchy gravy. The proper lor mee architecture.
The chicken cutlet lor mee at $5 added the same standard toppings plus a battered fried chicken cutlet sliced over the top. The chicken cutlet provides the crispy protein component that the standard pork belly doesn’t (the pork is soft-cooked), creating a different texture contrast in the bowl.
The chicken cutlet was the substantial upgrade. Battered chicken thigh, deep-fried until the skin crackled, sliced into strips and laid over the noodles. The crispy cutlet stays crispy on top while the noodles underneath soak up the gravy — by the time you eat through the bowl, the bottom of the cutlet has slightly softened from the gravy contact, while the top stays crisp.
The combination of the standard lor mee toppings (soft pork belly, soft fish cake, crispy fried wontons, soft hard-boiled egg, fresh bean sprouts) plus the additional chicken cutlet gives the chicken cutlet variant more textural variety than the standard version.
The garlic-vinegar sauce on the side was essential for both bowls. The sharp acidic-spicy lift cuts through the thick savoury gravy and the rich fried chicken cutlet.
At $4.80 for the standard and $5 for the chicken cutlet variant, the pricing difference is minimal — only $0.20 for the chicken cutlet upgrade. The chicken cutlet variant is clearly the better value if you want more protein in the bowl; the standard variant is the right choice if you want the classic lor mee experience without the additional protein.
Phase 2 had restored the hawker centres to full operation. The lor mee stalls have been steady through the year.
Overall: 4.1 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Solid lor mee duo — would re-order both variants.
