Rainy day late lunch after badminton ($3.50)!

Thursday rainy day late lunch — $3.50 hawker plate after the morning’s badminton session. The post-exercise hawker refuel during a monsoon afternoon.

The post-badminton refuel slot is one of those particular eating moments. You’ve burned a couple hundred calories in an hour-long session, you’re slightly dehydrated, and the rainy weather outside makes a hot bowl of hawker food the obvious move. The body wants protein, carbs, salt — all three things the $3.50 hawker plate delivers efficiently.

The $3.50 plate format is the entry-level hawker pricing in late 2020. Most stalls have moved their prices to $4-5 territory, so finding $3.50 plates is rare but not impossible. Usually this pricing comes from older stalls run by aunties or uncles who haven’t raised prices in years — they’re absorbing the rising costs rather than passing them on.

The plate could’ve been any of the regulars — fishball noodles, kway chap, hawker hokkien mee, or one of the noodle soup stalls. At $3.50 the choice is wide. We tend to pick whichever stall has the strong queue when we walk past, because the queue is the proxy for quality.

The rainy day adds the small pleasure of eating hot food while the sky pours outside. The hawker centre’s open-air format means you hear the rain on the canopy roofs above, smell the wet concrete from the parked rain, and feel the slight cooling of the air that the rain brings.

The post-exercise hunger combined with a hot $3.50 hawker plate on a rainy afternoon is one of the cleaner pleasure-to-cost ratios in Singapore.

Phase 2 had restored access to badminton, the hawker centres, and the small movement-and-meal routines. The combination became one of the small mid-week rituals.

The home weekday lunch is the steady baseline; the post-badminton hawker late lunch is the occasional break that delivers something the home plate can’t — the hawker centre’s specific energy and the variety we don’t cook at home.

Overall: 4.5 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Excellent post-badminton hawker refuel — would repeat the combination.
