Rainy day lunch!

Rainy day phase-2 lunch — hot home-cooked plate during a monsoon afternoon. Lockdown kitchen rhythm continues with the downpour.

Rainy day lunch!

Thursday rainy day lunch at home with BB — proper monsoon afternoon, rain drumming on the windows, no reason to leave the kitchen. Hot home-cooked plate to chase away the grey weather.

Today’s plate:

Rainy day cooking has a particular kind of comfort. The kitchen window steams up from the rice cooker and the simmering pots, the ambient temperature in the apartment ticks up two degrees from the cumulative cooking heat, and the rain outside provides that white-noise backdrop that makes you slow down and pay attention to the cooking.

Rice was the hot fluffy jasmine standby. Properly steamed.

Fried egg was the M-style sunny-side. Crispy white edges, runny golden yolk. The yolk-break-over-rice ritual gives the plate its small daily upgrade.

Stir-fried vegetables today were cabbage shreds and carrot strips with smashed garlic and a splash of soy. Tender-crisp stems, lightly seasoned.

Protein was a small portion of pan-fried sausage rounds — sliced from a Bratwurst link, hit in the pan in their own rendered fat, browned both sides. Crispy casing, juicy inside.

Chilli sauce on the side as always.

The rainy day rhythm felt different from the dry afternoon rhythm. We ate slower, drank hot tea instead of cold water, and stayed at the kitchen table longer than usual. The downpour outside the window made indoors feel more deliberately cozy.

Phase 2 reopening had restored some normalcy but rainy days were still firmly home-cooking days. Some habits earned their permanence during lockdown.

Overall: 4.2 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Quiet rainy day lunch — exactly what the weather called for.
