Old-school Chinese desserts (three bowls: $11.20)!
Late-night Chinese dessert run — chendol with red beans and gula melaka, peach gum with mango syrup, and warm almond paste at an old-school dessert shop. $11.20 for three.
Late-night sweet tooth — went to an old-school Chinese dessert shop with the classic blue-rim white bowls. Ordered three. 😋
What was on the table ($11.20 for three):
- Chendol with red beans — that signature mound of crushed ice topped with green pandan jelly noodles, sweet red beans, a dollop of cream, and a generous drizzle of gula melaka syrup in that distinctive orange-amber colour. Cold, sweet, tropical.
- Peach gum dessert with mango syrup — translucent peach gum (桃胶) chunks suspended in a mango syrup, topped with crushed ice flakes. Refreshing, slightly chewy texture from the peach gum.
- Warm almond paste (杏仁糊) — creamy white almond paste in a deep bowl, smooth and nutty. The kind that warms the chest as you slurp it.
Three desserts, three different textures: icy, gelatinous, creamy.
Total: $11.20. Old-school dessert shop pricing.
Overall: 4.3 / 5. Chendol was the standout — gula melaka was rich and the pandan jelly had proper bite. Almond paste was perfectly smooth. Will be back when the sweet tooth strikes again. 😍👍🏼
