Favourite soya bean drink ($0.80 each)!
Aljunied hawker fresh-pressed soya bean at $0.80 each — sweet, just-warm, made-that-morning. The kind of stop that anchors a weekend brunch.
Saturday morning post-breakfast detour — back to our favourite soya bean drink stall at the Aljunied hawker centre. BB and I have been quietly chasing the best-pressed bowls in our regular orbit, and this one keeps making the rotation.
We ordered:
- Soya bean drink — $0.80 each (we got two)
The drink itself is a giveaway when it’s made fresh. Pale cream colour, no chalkiness, faint nutty aroma off the cup. Sweetened with the syrup added at the till — you can ask for less if you want. The temperature is the tell: just-warm, not piping hot and not from the chilled bottle bin, which means the batch was pressed that morning.
It’s also the kind of pour that gets better as you walk with it — by the time we got back to our seats, the foam had settled and the sugar was fully dissolved.
For 80 cents you can’t really overthink it. The stall is one of those where the auntie still pours from the same big steel canister she’s been using forever, hands move on autopilot, no menu board needed.
Overall: 4.5 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Cheap, fresh, dependable — one of the small joys that makes hawker culture worth defending.
