Yuan Hokkien Fried Prawn Mee 元福建炒虾面 ($4)!

Yuan Hokkien Fried Prawn Mee 元福建炒虾面 at a Buona Vista hawker — $4 for a wet, prawn-stock-soaked plate with proper wok hei and a sambal sidekick.

Yuan Hokkien Fried Prawn Mee 元福建炒虾面 ($4)!

Saturday lunch — heard a lot about Yuan Hokkien Fried Prawn Mee (元福建炒虾面) at the Buona Vista hawker centre and finally made the trip out to try it. Easy access from Buona Vista MRT, walkable to the food centre in about five minutes.

We ordered:

Yuan’s plate leans the wet, mui fan side rather than dry — yellow noodles and bee hoon swimming in a glossy, prawn-stock-heavy gravy that has clearly been simmered down with prawn heads and shells. That’s the difference between this and the generic version: real stock, not water.

Wok hei was present, faint but there in the smoky char on the noodle edges. Prawns were halved, peeled, sweet. Slices of squid and pork belly gave it bite. A wedge of lime and a saucer of homemade sambal belacan came on the side — squeeze and dollop both for the full effect.

At $4 a plate, Yuan punches well above its price band. The stall has built a quiet reputation among hokkien mee chasers, and it earned the trip out west.

Overall: 4.1 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Strong, honest stall plate — would revisit if we’re back in the area.
