Wanton noodles ($5 each)!

Jalan Besar hawker wanton mee twin at $5 each — springy egg noodles, char siew slices, soup wantons on the side. Classic done right.

Wanton noodles ($5 each)!

Monday dinner detour to Jalan Besar with BB. The post-work crowd had thinned out by the time we got to the hawker, which is the right time to hit a wanton noodles stall before they run out of char siew.

We ordered:

Springy egg noodle texture — the kind that has a slight curl and bite, tossed in a sauce that leaned a little Cantonese rather than the typical Singapore sweet-soy. Just enough chilli paste to give it heat without drowning out the noodle taste.

Char siew slices were on the leaner side, glazed dark, with that caramelised edge that says proper char rather than just oven-roast. The soup bowl on the side held three plump wantons — thin skin, prawn-and-pork filling, in a clear stock with a single piece of choy sum to round it out.

Five dollars a bowl is honest hawker pricing in Jalan Besar territory — some places nearby push $7+ for the same thing with less skill. We polished both plates clean and added this stall to the rotation.

Overall: 4.5 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Quietly excellent — exactly what neighbourhood wanton mee should be.
