Mid-week Hokkien mee dinner ($5 each)!
Two plates of proper hawker-style Hokkien prawn mee with sambal chilli and calamansi on the side — that wok-hei fix mid-week. $5 each.
Mid-week craving struck and only Hokkien mee would do. Found a hawker stall serving the proper version — yellow noodles, bee hoon, the works — and we both got our own plates. No sharing. 😋
Each plate ($5):
- A tangle of stir-fried yellow noodles + bee hoon, soaked in that signature savoury prawn-and-pork broth before being fried so it absorbed all the flavour
- Plump prawns, sotong rings, scrambled bits of egg and beansprouts tossed throughout
- A sprinkle of crispy lard / chives — couldn’t pick them all out but you knew they were there
- Served on the trusty orange hawker plate, with sambal chilli and a half calamansi lime on the side
Squeeze the lime, mix in the chilli, attack the noodles. That’s the order.
The wok-hei was there — that smoky char only proper hawker heat can give. The noodles weren’t too wet, weren’t too dry. Just right.
Total: $10 for the two of us. Mid-week hawker win.
Overall: 4.2 / 5. Solid plate of Hokkien mee. Hit the spot exactly. 😍👍🏼
