卫赛节 (Vesak Day) — Mum's homemade 面粉粿 (mee hoon kueh)!
Vesak Day home brunch — Mum's homemade mee hoon kueh (面粉粿) with prawns, sliced fish, lettuce and fried ikan bilis in clear broth.
卫赛节 (Vesak Day) at home with the family — Mum cooked her famous 面粉粿 (mee hoon kueh). The kind of meal that no hawker can replicate. 😍
What was on the table:
- Two metal mess tins of hand-torn mee hoon kueh — irregular flat flour pieces, some thinner, some thicker, hand-pinched by Mum.
- A clean clear ikan bilis broth — slightly cloudy from hours of simmering, deep umami from real dried fish.
- Fresh prawns (heads off), sweet and snappy.
- Slices of fresh fish for the seafood backbone.
- A generous handful of fresh iceberg lettuce for the green crunch.
- A sprinkle of fried ikan bilis scattered on top for that crispy-salty top note.
Mum’s mee hoon kueh always tastes better than any stall version — the irregular pieces, the broth depth, the love in the soup. Vesak Day comfort food.
Total: home cooked.
Overall: family meal, no rating needed. Thanks Mum 🙏. 😍👍🏼
