酿豆腐 (yong tau foo soup) at a Chinatown hawker ($4.50)!
Yong tau foo soup (酿豆腐) at a Chinatown hawker — fish balls, stuffed beancurd, fried tau pok and scallions in clear broth. $4.50, with side chilli.
Quick lunch — went for the 酿豆腐 (yong tau foo) soup at a Chinatown hawker stall. $4.50. Light, clean, exactly what the body wanted. 😋
What was in the orange bowl ($4.50):
- A clear, light brown soup base — properly flavoured from simmered ikan bilis and soya beans, slightly peppery.
- Bouncy fish balls — classic, white, firm.
- Pieces of fried tau pok with golden crispy skin and absorbent insides.
- Chunks of stuffed beancurd (yong tau foo) with that signature minced fish paste pocket.
- A scatter of chopped scallions for the green and aroma.
- A side dish of red chilli sauce for dipping each piece.
Slurped the soup first — clean and warming. Then worked through each ingredient, dipping into the chilli between bites.
Total: $4.50. Hawker-priced YTF soup.
Overall: 4.5 / 5. Soup was the highlight — proper depth without being heavy, and every ingredient had bite. The kind of meal you have when you want to feel light without skipping flavour. 😍👍🏼
