Braised duck rice at a hawker stall ($4.10)!
Hawker braised duck rice — sliced braised duck, tau kwa and rice in dark herbal gravy. $4.10.
Lunch hawker run for braised duck rice at $4.10. Classic Teochew comfort plate. 😋
What was on the blue plate ($4.10):
- A generous mound of white rice drizzled with dark braised gravy — herbal, slightly sweet, infused with star anise and five-spice.
- Sliced braised duck breast — tender, soaked through with the gravy, that signature dark caramelised skin.
- Sliced tau kwa (braised firm beancurd) — soaked in the same dark sauce, slightly chewy on the outside, soft inside.
- A dollop of chilli sauce with shredded ginger on the side — the must-have condiment.
Mixed everything together, dipped each duck slice into the chilli before each bite.
Total: $4.10. Hawker lunch pricing for proper Teochew braised duck.
Overall: 4.3 / 5. Duck was tender and not gamey, gravy was properly herbal without being too sweet, and the tau kwa soaked it all up. Honest hawker plate. 😍👍🏼
