Sotong ball seafood ee mian soup at a Chinatown hawker ($6.50)!
Seafood ee mian soup at a Chinatown hawker stall — egg noodles in clear broth with cuttlefish balls (sotong balls), fish balls, fish cake, choy sum and a dollop of sambal. $6.50.
Solo lunch in Chinatown — went for something soupy and light: sotong ball seafood ee mian at a hawker stall. $6.50. 😋
What was on the yellow plate ($6.50):
- A nest of springy egg noodles (ee mian / yi mein) in a clear, peppery soup.
- A mix of sotong balls (cuttlefish balls) — bouncy, with that distinct chewy seafood snap.
- A few classic fish balls floating alongside.
- A thick slice of fish cake and bits of fried fish bits scattered through.
- A pile of fragrant sambal chilli plonked right in the middle — to dab or mix in as I went.
- Fresh choy sum stems and chopped spring onions for the green.
The sotong balls were the standout — extra-bouncy with a proper seafood sweetness. The soup base was clean but well-seasoned, and a dab of the sambal totally transformed each spoonful.
Total: $6.50. Bit pricier than the $4 hawker bowls but worth it for the cuttlefish ball upgrade.
Overall: 4.2 / 5. Honest seafood ee mian with proper bounce in the balls, and that sambal absolutely made the bowl. Will come back when craving something light. 😍👍🏼
