Sushi for dinner, TGIF!
Bugis TGIF sushi dinner date with BB — mid-tier Japanese chain spread of nigiri, maki, and chawanmushi to close out the week.
TGIF date dinner with BB at one of the Japanese chain sushi spots in Bugis. After a long work week the move is always somewhere with the rice already cooked, the fish already sliced, and a conveyor belt or a tablet to order from.
We ordered a small spread:
- Assorted nigiri (salmon, tuna, shrimp, tamago)
- A handful of maki rolls
- Chawanmushi
- Hot tea on tap
The salmon nigiri was the strongest plate — clean, properly chilled, with rice that was seasoned just enough to register as sushi rice and not just sticky rice. Tuna was decent but leaned on the lean cut, which limits it. Tamago was fluffy, slightly sweet, the way the chain consistently does it.
Maki rolls were the usual cucumber-and-prawn or crab-mayo crowd-pleasers. Not the place to chase artisanal omakase work — it’s about turnaround and dependable quality, both of which the chain delivers at this price band.
Chawanmushi was the surprise winner: silky egg custard with shimeji, prawn and chicken, properly steamed without rubbery edges.
Bugis on a Friday night is a slow scrum of office workers blowing off steam. The sushi spot was busy but moving, which is the right energy for a TGIF.
Overall: 4 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Honest mid-tier sushi — would absolutely repeat for a low-stress Friday.
