Hainanese beef noodles ($7)!

A comforting hawker dinner with BB: a bowl of beef noodles ($7), soup style. πŸ˜‹

What we had:

This was the soup version rather than the dry, and the broth did all the heavy lifting. It is the kind of beef soup that gets simmered down with bones until it turns rich and a little starchy-thick, deeply savoury with that gentle herbal-peppery note you get in a good Hainanese-style bowl. Spoonful after spoonful it just kept giving.

The beef slices were the soft, just-cooked kind that go straight into the hot soup so they stay tender rather than chewy, and there was a generous pile of them sitting over the noodles. The yellow noodles had a good springy bite and soaked up the broth nicely. A dash of chilli or some chopped chilli padi on the side is all it needs to lift the whole thing.

Simple, warming, the sort of unglamorous bowl you keep coming back to on a quiet weeknight. At $7 it is honest hawker value for the amount of beef in there.

Overall: 4.7 / 5. πŸ˜‹πŸ‘πŸΌ Tender beef and springy noodles in a rich, savoury soup, proper comfort food. Would re-order.
