Nyonya laksa ($6) & Lime juice ($1)!
A hawker bowl of Nyonya laksa: thick rice noodles in coconut curry broth with tau pok and fish cake, plus a cooling lime juice. $7 for both.
A simple, satisfying hawker dinner with BB: a bowl of Nyonya laksa ($6) and a lime juice ($1). 😋
What we had ($7 total):
- Nyonya laksa ($6): thick rice noodles in a coconut curry broth, topped with tau pok (puffy tofu), fish cake, a spoon of sambal and a sprinkle of dried laksa leaf
- Lime juice ($1): icy and tart, the standard hawker pairing
The broth was the star. That gorgeous orange curry is built on coconut milk, dried shrimp and a rempah of lemongrass, galangal, chilli and belacan, so it comes out creamy, fragrant and gently spicy all at once. Stirring the sambal in dialled up the heat, and the thick noodles soaked the whole thing up. The tau pok did its job too, drinking in the gravy so each bite was a little burst of broth.
It is the kind of rich, comforting bowl that can sit a bit heavy by the end, which is exactly where the lime juice earns its dollar. Cold and sharp, it cut clean through the coconut richness and reset the palate between mouthfuls.
Nothing fancy, just a properly made laksa at an honest hawker price, with the perfect cooling drink alongside.
Overall: 4.7 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Creamy, fragrant Nyonya laksa with a lime juice to balance it, great value at $7. Would re-order.
