Lunch ($3): cai png with congee!

A budget hawker lunch: a plate of mixed vegetables (bittergourd with egg, tang hoon, greens with minced meat) with a bowl of plain congee. $3.

Lunch ($3): cai png with congee!

About as honest and cheap as lunch gets: a $3 plate of cai png (economy rice) with a bowl of congee. ๐Ÿ˜‹

What I had:

This is the everyday economy-rice approach, except paired with porridge instead of rice, which makes it lighter and gentler. The congee is the plain, soothing base, smooth and watery, the perfect blank canvas for the savoury dishes.

The plate covered a nice range. The bittergourd with egg was the standout for me: that gentle bitterness mellowed by soft scrambled egg is a real comfort dish, the kind grandmothers make. The tang hoon was slippery and savoury, soaking up its sauce, and the leafy greens with minced meat added something fresh and a bit of protein. You spoon a little of each over the congee and eat them together.

It is plain, balanced, comforting food, nothing flashy, just the kind of cheap, wholesome meal that has fed Singapore for generations. At $3, it is hard to argue with.

Overall: 4.4 / 5. ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ Comforting bittergourd egg, tang hoon and greens with plain congee, humble and great value. Would re-do.
