Mid week Christmas lunch!
A mid-week Christmas-season lunch: a self-pick economy rice (cai fan) plate with fried noodles, panko prawns, Taiwan sausage, fried tofu and stir-fried cabbage, plus a coffee.
A simple mid-week lunch in the lead-up to Christmas with BB. π No turkey or trimmings here, just a comforting economy rice (cai fan) plate, which is honestly what we felt like.
What was on the plate:
- Fried noodles as the base.
- Panko-fried prawns, crispy and golden.
- A slice of Taiwan sausage, sweet and a little smoky.
- Fried tofu puffs.
- Stir-fried cabbage and greens.
- A cup of coffee to go with it.
This is the beauty of cai fan (economy / mixed vegetable rice): you walk up to the spread, point at whatever looks good, and build your own plate. Itβs everyday Singapore eating at its most democratic, a bit of fried noodle, a crispy protein or two, a vegetable for balance, all piled together for a few dollars.
The panko prawns were the highlight, crunchy and sweet, and the Taiwan sausage added that moreish sweet-savoury bite, with the cabbage keeping things from feeling too heavy. Itβs not fancy festive fare, but it was exactly the comforting, no-fuss lunch we wanted during a busy pre-Christmas week.
Overall: 4.7 / 5. πππΌ A comforting self-pick cai fan plate, crispy panko prawns and sweet Taiwan sausage the standouts. Humble, satisfying everyday eating. Would re-do.
