A soothing Teochew porridge dinner with BB: $6.80 for the spread. 😋
What we had:
- Two bowls of plain rice porridge with a century egg in each
- Braised tofu in dark sauce
- Stir-fried cabbage with black fungus
- A preserved-radish omelette (chai poh) with carrot and chilli
Teochew porridge is the gentle, comforting dinner where bowls of soft, watery congee are eaten with a spread of savoury little dishes you pick at between spoonfuls. There is a century egg sitting in each bowl, that black, jelly-like preserved egg with its rich, funky depth, lovely broken into the plain rice.
The sides did the work. The braised tofu was soft and soaked in a savoury dark sauce, the stir-fried cabbage with black fungus brought a sweet, crunchy freshness, and the chai poh omelette had that classic salty-sweet bite from the preserved radish. Each one a different little flavour to spoon over the rice.
Plain porridge with a handful of well-made sides is honest, homely, easy-on-the-stomach eating, exactly the kind of quiet dinner you want at the end of a long day. At $6.80 for two it was a comforting, satisfying spread.
Overall: 4.3 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Soothing plain porridge with century egg and tasty sides, gentle comfort food. Would re-order.
