A homely hawker lunch, a bowl of 幼面 (thin noodles) in soup for $3. 😋
What we had:
- Thin noodles in soup: with minced pork, a soft egg, crispy ikan bilis, fried shallots, coriander and leafy greens, with chilli on the side
This is the comforting Hakka-style soup noodle, and it was a generous bowl. The thin noodles sat in a cloudy, savoury broth that tastes of all the good stuff piled on top, the kind of soup you keep spooning up.
The toppings did the work: plenty of soft minced pork, a soft egg broken into the soup so the yolk enriches the broth, a big heap of crispy ikan bilis (fried anchovies) for that salty, savoury crunch, fried shallots for fragrance, fresh coriander and some leafy greens for balance. The ikan bilis is really what makes this kind of bowl, lending the whole soup that deep, moreish savouriness.
Stir in a spoon of the chilli on the side and it wakes right up. Soft noodles, rich soup, crunchy anchovies, a runny egg, it is honest comfort food, and at $3 it is a proper bargain. Exactly the sort of bowl that hits the spot on an ordinary day.
Overall: 4.5 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Thin noodles in a savoury broth with minced pork, a soft egg and crispy ikan bilis. Would re-order.
