Sunday's Ponggol Seafood dinner after ๐ธ!
Sunday Ponggol Seafood post-badminton dinner. Punggol seafood specialty zi char.
A well-earned seafood feast at Ponggol Seafood after our Sunday badminton games. ๐ธ๐ Nothing like a big zi char spread to refuel.
Ponggol Seafood is one of Singaporeโs heritage seafood zi char names (the old โPonggolโ spelling nods to its Punggol fishing-village roots), and we went all in with a proper sharing spread:
- Crab, done both ways: a dark, peppery black pepper crab and a saucy chilli-style crab, the messy, finger-licking centrepieces.
- Prawns in a rich, savoury sauce.
- Fried items (ngoh hiang / spring-roll-style rolls), crisp and meaty.
- La la (clams) in a fragrant sauce.
- Sambal kang kong, the obligatory garlicky-spicy greens.
- Braised eggs and other zi char sides.
This is everything you want from a Singapore seafood dinner: crab as the star, eaten with your hands, the black pepper version all peppery and buttery, the other rich with chilli sauce you mop up with mantou. The prawns were plump and sweet, the kang kong brought the spicy-savoury vegetable balance, and the spread of fried bits and clams kept everyone reaching across the table. A hearty, generous, sociable meal, exactly the reward you want after a sweaty afternoon on court.
Overall: 4.8 / 5. ๐๐๐ผ A proper crab-led seafood zi char feast, peppery and saucy and generous, the perfect post-badminton refuel. Would re-visit.
