Tamago sando ($13+) & Salmon ochazuke ($16+) — Burpple Beyond: $16+!
A Japanese-cafe brunch on Burpple Beyond 1-for-1: a fluffy tamago sando and a grilled salmon ochazuke with tea poured over rice. $16 effective.
A Japanese-cafe brunch with BB, made great value by a Burpple Beyond 1-for-1: a tamago sando ($13+) and a salmon ochazuke ($16+), effective $16+ for both. 😋
What we had:
- Tamago sando ($13+): a thick egg sandwich with a side salad and crisp tapioca chips
- Salmon ochazuke ($16+): grilled salmon over rice, topped with shredded nori, with a jug of tea to pour over
The tamago sando was the comforting one. Instead of the cold egg-salad style, this was a folded omelette tucked between toasted milk bread, soft and a little eggy-sweet, with the crunchy tapioca chips and greens on the side making it feel like a full plate rather than just a sandwich.
The salmon ochazuke was the dish I came for. You get a bowl of rice topped with a piece of grilled salmon and nori, then pour the warm tea (or dashi) over at the table. The broth softens the rice into something between a porridge and a soup, the salmon flakes into it, and the nori adds that toasty seaweed savour. It is gentle, savoury, restorative food, the kind of thing you crave when you want comfort without heaviness.
Two very different Japanese dishes, both done well, and at $16 for the pair the Burpple deal made it a steal.
Overall: 4.7 / 5. 😋👍🏼 A fluffy tamago sando and a soothing salmon ochazuke, excellent value on the 1-for-1. Would re-order.
