Friday lunch to ease into the weekend: a plate of Hokkien mee for $4. π¦π
What we had:
- Hokkien mee: yellow noodles and bee hoon braised in prawn stock with squid, egg and crispy lard, with sambal on the side
This bowl leaned generous on the seafood, with rings of tender squid tumbled through the noodles. The mix of yellow noodles and bee hoon had soaked up a savoury prawn stock, finished moist so they stay slippery, with ribbons of egg and crunchy crispy lard bits scattered on top.
The squid was the highlight, soft and sweet, adding that extra shellfish depth on top of the prawn-stock base. A good Hokkien mee has that braised-but-not-soggy texture where each strand carries the stock, and this one had it.
The sambal on the side is essential: stir a spoonful in and the whole plate lifts with chilli heat and a bit of tang, cutting through the richness. Cheap, savoury and satisfying, a fitting Friday plate to wind the week down with.
Overall: 4.5 / 5. πππΌ Prawn-stock noodles with tender squid and crispy lard, sambal stirred through. Would re-order.
