The Colombian cold brew gelato was the substantial coffee scoop. Made with cold-brewed Colombian coffee infused into the gelato base, the flavour profile leans the smooth, chocolate-leaning, low-acid side of coffee (which is what Colombian cold brew naturally tastes like). Deeper coffee depth than the standard espresso-flavoured gelato that most shops do, with a slight roasted-sweet aftertaste.
Cookie butter bits gelato was the dessert counterpoint. Cookie butter (Speculoos cookie spread, similar to Lotus Biscoff) is the spiced-cinnamon-caramelised-cookie paste that’s basically a hipster Nutella alternative. Made into gelato, it has that signature cinnamon-warm-cookie flavour with crunchy bits of actual cookie pieces distributed through the cream.
The combination eats the way an affogato with cookie should eat. Coffee deepens the cookie’s caramelised-cinnamon notes; cookie sweetness rounds out the coffee’s bitter edge. Each spoonful brings both flavours together.
Jumbo lavender cone provided the upgrade base. The housemade waffle cone with the faint lavender perfume is the gelato shop’s signature carrier. Slight crisp texture, slight floral aroma, pairs with whatever scoops you put on top.
At $5 for the double scoop + $1.40 for the cone upgrade, total $6.40 is fair specialty gelato pricing. The standard cones at this shop run $4-5 for a double scoop without the lavender upgrade; the $1.40 upgrade for the lavender waffle is worth it for the texture and aroma improvement.
We sat at a small table, ate slow. The Thursday afternoon energy was the right kind for a coffee-flavoured dessert — gentle caffeine hit, sweet ending to the workday.
