What we had ($6):
- Dry minced meat mee hoon kueh, with extra kueh and an egg, $6
Back at Belly First in the 333 Coffee Shop, 61 Kaki Bukit Ave 1. I have had their mee hoon kueh in soup and the ban mian dry before; this time it was the mee hoon kueh dry, with the two add-ons that make it a fuller meal.
The extra kueh is worth it. The dough is torn by hand only after you order, so the pieces are uneven, thin and silky at the edges and thicker through the middle. Dry, they hold their chew right to the bottom of the bowl, and doubling up on them turns a light bowl into a filling one.
They came tossed in a little dark sauce, just enough to season rather than drown, under a heap of savoury minced pork, a tangle of fried shallots, a big handful of crispy ikan bilis, and a few leaves of sayur manis for greenery.
The egg came soft, the white barely set and the yolk still runny. Break it early and stir it through: it coats the kueh like a sauce and smooths out the salty crunch of the ikan bilis, which is exactly why it is worth the add-on.
A small bowl of clear soup comes on the side, light and peppery, good for sipping in between or tipping a spoonful in if the toss gets tight.
Overall: 4.3 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Chewy hand-torn kueh, crunchy ikan bilis and a runny egg tying it together. The dry version with egg is now my favourite order here.
