Fuzhou fishball kway teow soup ($4.50) @ Ming Fa Fishball, Our Tampines Hub!

Fuzhou fishball kway teow soup from Ming Fa Fishball at Our Tampines Hub, $4.50. 🐟😋

What we had ($4.50):

Ming Fa is at stall #01-73 in the hawker centre at Our Tampines Hub, a short walk from Tampines MRT. The business goes back to 1946, when it started as a pushcart in the back lanes of Chinatown, and it is now run by the third generation across more than a dozen outlets. Fishballs are still the whole point.

The Fuzhou fishballs are the reason to order this over the plain fishball soup. They are bigger than the usual bouncy white ones, and each has a minced pork filling inside, so biting in gets you a springy fish shell and then a savoury, juicy centre. Three of them came in the bowl.

Alongside were long slices of fishcake, pale with a lightly browned edge, plus kway teow gone soft and silky in the broth and a heap of lettuce.

The soup is clear and clean, gently fishy and peppery rather than salty, and at $4.50 it is one of the cheapest full bowls in the hawker centre. It is a light lunch rather than a heavy one, which is the appeal.

If you want something richer, their dry fishball noodles come tossed with chilli, lard and vinegar, and that is the order I would try next.

Overall: 4.1 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Juicy pork-filled Fuzhou fishballs in a clean broth, at a hawker price that is hard to beat.
