This Koo Kee is in the Kim San Leng coffee shop at 511 Bishan Street 13. Koo Kee is one of the big yong tau foo names in Singapore, with outlets all over the island, and you spot it straight away from the lime-green bowls stamped ้ซ่จ้่ฑ่ ้บต.
It is the Hakka style of yong tau foo, which means you do not pick your own pieces from a tray. You get a set selection, and it comes as two bowls: the yong tau foo in soup, and the noodles dry on the side.
The soup is the star. It is a clear ikan bilis broth, clean and savoury with a hint of sweetness, and this version comes loaded with spinach, a big tangle of it wilted into the broth. That is what makes it the spinach set, and it means you get a decent amount of greens with lunch.
In the soup with it were a fishball, a block of stuffed tofu with fish paste, a fishcake, golden tau pok and a roll of fried beancurd skin, each one soaking up the broth.
The noodles were thin, springy egg noodles tossed dry, with a generous spoon of minced pork on top. Toss them well so the seasoning gets all the way through, then go back and forth between the noodles and the soup.
Overall: 4.2 / 5. ๐๐๐ผ A clean ikan bilis broth, plenty of spinach and springy dry noodles. A reliable, light lunch.
