Duo Pao Fan at King of Pao Fan ($6 each)!
Two bowls of Duo Pao Fan at King of Pao Fan, Queen Street (Bugis) — steamed and fried fish in a rich seafood broth over rice, $6 each.
Sunday lunch and the pao fan craze was at full tilt. Headed down to King of Pao Fan at Cheng Yan Court (Queen Street, just behind Bugis+) to see if the hype was real. 😋
Both went with the Duo Pao Fan ($6) — their hero dish:
A bright yellow bowl filled with their signature seafood broth, generous slices of steamed fish AND crispy chunks of fried fish, topped with chopped scallions. The broth was rich and full of umami — you could tell it was simmered down properly. The contrast between the silky steamed fish and the crispy fried fish chunks in the same bowl is the whole point — and it works.
Bowls came piping hot, with rice already submerged so each spoonful soaked up the soup.
Total: $12 for the two bowls. Solid value for ex-Raffles Hotel chef cooking.
Overall: 4.2 / 5. The pao fan wave is real. Will be back. 😍👍🏼
