Grain bento ($5)!
Grain promo bento box $5 — circuit breaker era cheap delivery special. Rice base, protein, vegetables, sauce. Healthy delivery default.
Circuit breaker lunch — Grain promo bento for $5, ordered via delivery. The pandemic lockdown era was when Grain made the affordable bento push and it was a smart play because the rest of us were stuck at home and didn’t want to cook every meal.
We ordered:
- Grain promo bento — $5
Grain bentos are the “healthy delivery default” — clean ingredient sourcing, balanced macros, and the kind of food you can eat without feeling like you skipped a workout for it. The $5 promo bento was the entry point: a smaller portion at a starter price, designed to get you onto their app and into the rotation.
Box came with a rice or grain base (we got the brown rice option), a protein piece (chicken thigh with a soy-honey glaze), a few vegetable sides (roasted root vegetables, blanched greens), a small ramekin of sauce, and a fork-and-spoon set tucked in.
Chicken was tender, properly seasoned, with a slight char on the skin from the broiler finish. Brown rice held its bite without going chalky. Roasted root vegetables (carrot, pumpkin, sweet potato) brought sweetness and colour. Greens (kale or bok choy depending on the day) provided the obligatory leafy.
At $5 delivered, this was the kind of pricing that made Grain a circuit-breaker hero brand. Cheaper than ordering most pizzas, healthier than every fast-food chain, and a real escape valve when you didn’t have the energy to cook.
Overall: 4.3 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Solid delivery lunch — would absolutely re-order during lockdown.
