Mid-week char siew dinner at Char Restaurant!
Hong Kong-style char siew with poached egg, crispy garlic, scallions and a side of stir-fried greens at Char Restaurant (Lavender/Jalan Besar). $44.75 for two.
Hump-day craving for proper char siew brought us to Char Restaurant at Jalan Besar โ the modern-Cantonese spot famous for, well, char siew. ๐
We shared two dishes (plus chrysanthemum tea):
- Char siew rice bowl with poached egg โ sliced honey-glazed char siew over a bed of rice, with a generous puddle of jus, lots of crispy fried garlic, scallions and a soft poached egg on the side. Break the egg, mix it in, and every spoonful gets richer. The char siew was tender, with proper caramelisation on the edges.
- Stir-fried greens with sliced pork โ leafy greens (looked like choy sum), wok-tossed with sliced pork and crispy shallots in a savoury soy-based sauce. Comforting and proper home-style.
- Hot tea to wash it all down โ chrysanthemum maybe, light and clean on the palate.
Damage: $44.75 for two. A treat-yourself mid-week meal.
Overall: 4.3 / 5. The char siew lived up to its name. The crispy garlic on top? Genius. Will be back. ๐๐๐ผ
