Popcorn chicken rice ($5.50 each)!
Kallang hawker Western stall popcorn chicken rice $5.50 each — bite-sized fried chicken bits, rice, and a side of fries-or-coleslaw.
Monday lunch at the Kallang hawker centre Western stall with BB. Popcorn chicken rice is one of those budget-friendly orders that gets the kids and the office workers in equal measure — and we were in office-worker mode.
We ordered:
- Popcorn chicken rice — $5.50
- Popcorn chicken rice — $5.50
Popcorn chicken is the platonic ideal of fried chicken for snacking — bite-sized boneless chunks with a crispy seasoned batter that holds even after sitting on the plate for a couple of minutes. The seasoning leaned salt-and-pepper with a faint chilli kick, not the overly garlic-powdered kind you sometimes get.
The white rice base under it was a sensible portion — enough to soak up a bit of mayo and ketchup, not so much that the chicken got buried. Each plate came with a small side of crinkle-cut fries and a scoop of coleslaw, the classic hawker-Western trio.
Most popcorn chicken rice stalls run on the same playbook: cheap, plentiful, and consistent. The Kallang stall delivered on all three.
At $5.50 a plate this is honest hawker-Western pricing — well under what any chain charges for fewer pieces.
Kallang hawker centre has a steady lunch crowd of office workers, sports hub visitors, and families, which keeps the turnover fast.
Overall: 4.4 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Solid hawker-Western lunch — would absolutely revisit.
