Vanilla ice cream!

Bukit Batok gelato shop vanilla scoop — the underrated default that tells you how good every other flavour will be.

Vanilla ice cream!

Thursday afternoon — Bukit Batok area errand and a gelato shop on the way back home. BB usually orders something flavoured but I always end up testing a new place by going vanilla first.

We ordered:

Vanilla is the order I default to when I want to test how well a gelato shop actually makes ice cream, because there’s nowhere to hide. No chocolate fudge masking thin texture, no fruit purée covering sugar levels — just dairy, sugar, and proper vanilla.

This scoop passed. Pale ivory colour with the dark flecks of real vanilla bean visible through it, not the synthetic yellow you get from extract-only versions. Aroma off the scoop was the warm, faintly floral perfume of actual Madagascan-style vanilla. Dense, properly cold without being icy, with that creamy mouthfeel that says good butterfat and slow churn.

Sweetness was restrained — you could taste the vanilla through it instead of the other way around. The kind of vanilla that pairs well with anything (warm pie, espresso, fruit) but holds its own as a solo scoop.

A good vanilla is a top-down indicator. If a place gets vanilla right, the rest of the menu is probably worth working through.

Overall: 4.3 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Quietly excellent vanilla — will absolutely come back to try the rest of the flavours.
