Sliced fish mee hoon kuey at a hawker stall ($4.50)!
Hawker mee hoon kuey — hand-torn flour sheets in clear ikan bilis broth, sliced fish, fried dried fish, minced pork and sweet potato leaves. $4.50.
Old-school light lunch — sliced fish mee hoon kuey (面粉粿) at a hawker stall, $4.50. Hand-torn flour sheets in clear broth — the kind of bowl that reminds you of grandma’s kitchen. 😋
What was in the black bowl ($4.50):
- A generous serving of hand-torn mee hoon kuey — irregular flat pieces of flour dough, slightly thick, soft on the outside with a slight chew in the centre.
- A clear, light brown ikan bilis broth — properly simmered, with the fragrance of fried dried fish bones coming through.
- Pieces of fresh sliced fish — clean, white, mildly sweet.
- A small mound of minced pork in the middle.
- A piece of fried dried fish (ti po) for that crispy salty top note.
- A generous bunch of sweet potato leaves for the green and earthy bite.
- A side dish of red chilli sauce for the dip.
The broth was the centrepiece — proper ikan bilis fragrance, the kind that makes you slurp every last spoonful.
Total: $4.50. Hawker comfort food pricing.
Overall: 4.3 / 5. Hand-torn flour pieces were the right thickness — soft but with bite. Sweet potato leaves added freshness. The kind of bowl I’d come back for on a tired day. 😍👍🏼
