Har cheong gai rice bowl at a hawker stall ($6)!
Modern hawker rice bowl — har cheong gai (prawn paste chicken) with sambal chilli, onsen egg, cucumber strips and rice. $6.
Modern hawker lunch — har cheong gai rice bowl at $6. The bowl that makes you forget the dish was supposed to be a zi char favourite. 😋
What was in the stone-look bowl ($6):
- A bed of white rice at the base.
- A generous pile of har cheong gai (prawn paste chicken) — golden battered chunks with that signature fermented shrimp paste fragrance, drizzled with sweet chilli sauce for extra punch.
- A half-boiled onsen egg sitting on top of the rice — runny yolk just waiting to be broken.
- A bunch of shredded cucumber for the cool crunch.
- A dusting of dried parsley for the colour pop.
Broke the yolk, mixed it into the rice, then went in with the chicken. The prawn paste fragrance + runny yolk + sweet chilli combo had no business being this good for $6.
Total: $6. Hawker pricing for a modern bowl format.
Overall: 4.5 / 5. Chicken was crispy under the chilli, prawn paste flavour was distinctive without being overpowering, and the onsen egg coated everything in silk. Great new-school hawker format. 😍👍🏼
