What we had ($6.20):
- Economic noodles with sides, $6.20
Ahjuma is the economic bee hoon stall in the hawker centre at Our Tampines Hub, near Tampines MRT. The format is the classic economic bee hoon one: pick your base from bee hoon, yellow mee or kway teow, then point at whatever sides you want from the trays. Their basic value set starts under three dollars, so $6.20 means I went heavy on the toppings.
The base was fried bee hoon, thin and lightly seasoned, with a bit of wok fragrance and not greasy. Economic bee hoon is meant to be plain, because the sides do the talking.
The sides are where it got generous. A heap of soft fried cabbage with carrot, a pile of long beans stir-fried until they were tender but still had some snap, two slabs of fried tofu golden outside and soft inside, and a big breaded cutlet with a crunchy crumb coat.
Takeaway came the old-school way, wrapped in brown paper, which is part of the charm. The paper soaks up the oil, the noodles stay warm, and everything arrives in a neat bundle.
It is a no-fuss plate that does exactly what it says: filling, quick, and cheap enough to build your own way.
Overall: 4 / 5. ๐๐๐ผ Light fried bee hoon with tender long beans, soft cabbage and a crunchy cutlet. A solid, no-fuss plate.
