Big Prawn Bee Hoon at Da Shi Jia ($16.80)!
Da Shi Jia Big Prawn Mee (大食家大大大虾面) at Killiney Road — Big Prawn White Bee Hoon with a giant tiger prawn, fragrant prawn broth, fried garlic and pork lard. $16.80++.
Back at Da Shi Jia Big Prawn Mee (大食家大大大虾面) at Killiney Road near Somerset. Their Big Prawn White Bee Hoon is one of those dishes that’s worth the queue every time. 😋
Ordered the signature ($16.80++):
- A neat coil of bee hoon, first charred dry then braised in their concentrated prawn stock — so each strand soaks up the umami, with proper wok-hei smokiness coming through.
- One enormous tiger prawn lying right on top, head and shell split open showing the roe and translucent flesh inside. Sweet and properly fresh.
- Generous fried garlic crisps and pork lard scattered all over for the crunchy-salty hit that makes the whole bowl sing.
- Served on a pretty blue-and-white china plate, with their housemade sambal chilli and a prawn paste dip on the side, plus a glass of cooling sugar cane juice to drink.
Stir, dip, slurp. Repeat until the prawn head is empty.
Overall: 4.2 / 5. The bee hoon was beautifully infused, the prawn was huge and not overcooked, and the pork lard sealed the deal. Restaurant prices but you can taste where it goes. 😍👍🏼
